NMU student organization to open first student produced musical

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – NMU DoIt, a student organization founded in February is getting ready for its first production, and the cast ad director couldn’t be more excited.

“It’s really just a bunch of NMU’s best coming together and putting on a production,” said one of the show’s leads Liam Fisher. “And it’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before but it’s just as professional which it exciting.”

“I’m so proud of this project and all of the hard work and talented individuals that have contributed to it,” said show director Lia Hielkema.

The production, a musical called “The Last Five Years” will be NMU’s first student acted, directed, and produced show.

“It’s just been a really collaborative opportunity,” said Hielkema. “We have students from the music department, tech, and of course the BFA acting and musical theatre. So it’s just really been a special collaborative process that I don’t think has existed at northern previously.”

The Last Five Years tells the story of a relationship spanning five years from two different perspectives.

“The music is phenomenal, and the story itself is just gut wrenching, especially for people that have never seen the show before and who aren’t really familiar with the music,” said Fisher. “I think those are the people that will enjoy it the most.”

Fisher said his role in the show is difficult but he’s enjoyed the process.

“It’s different. It’s different than any role I’ve ever done,” said Fisher. “But that’s what makes it exciting as an actor, it’s something that’s new, something that you can tackle that’s fresh.”

Fisher also said the show is a big step not only for the organization, but for the university as a whole.

“If the students feel like a show was left out of the season, or if there’s a show that everyone’s really dying to do, like this one,” said Fisher. “We have the power now to produce a full length musical or a full length play just by ourselves, which is super exciting.”

The show will run November 14-16 in the Panowski Black Box Theatre.

Admission will be free, click here for more information about tickets and for a list of show times.
