SANDS TWP., Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette County’s Sawyer Regional Airport is expanding service. Beginning January 3rd delta will be flying from Marquette to Minneapolis, resurrecting a route canceled in 2022.

It’s only one additional flight per day, but it is a major step in the right direction for access to our area, Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport is adding an early morning flight to Minneapolis, The effort to gain this additional flight was due to the cooperation of the Lake Superior Community Partnership, Invest UP, Marquette County, and private-sector businesses. LSCP CEO Christopher Germain made the announcement.

“We were actually able to announce the re-establishment of air service between Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport and Minneapolis International Airport, with a new daily direct flight in the morning out to Minneapolis so folks can then go out west into all places all over the country,” said Germain..

Not only is it another option for travelers, but this new flight departs earlier, allowing for more connections and same-day arrival to their destinations.

“It also changes the timing of our Detroit flight away from an evening flight into an early afternoon flight, allowing folks multiple chances to get out of Detroit and into other areas as well,” said Germain.

This new flight will be operated by Sky West Airlines under the Delta Airlines name. It will help to make Marquette County more accessible to business travelers. Something Invest UP’s CEO Marty Fittante says any new flights will improve the business community.

“We hear about the difficulty of getting in and out of the community because of the lack of robust and reliable air service weekly. So this is, you know, really impactful news,” said Fittante.

All parties involved hope to change the mindset of local travelers and that they consider the stress-free convenience of our hometown airport
