ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, law enforcement and community members ran through the streets of Escanaba for a worthy cause.
Escanaba Public Safety led the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which supports the Special Olympics. Public Safety officers, local volunteer firefighters, Michigan State Police personnel, and community members of all ages walked, ran, biked, and rode scooters from Elmer’s County Market to Catmando’s. Catmando’s dedicated its final Bike & Classic Car Night fundraiser of the season to the Torch Run.
According to Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Councilmember Carla White, the money raised will allow athletes to compete in the sports they love at the Special Olympics.
“Whether it’s on a local level or when they go to state games, the Torch Run has actually been able to sponsor the entire state summer games and the fall games that are coming up so the local area does not have to fundraise to get the athletes down to those games,” White said.
The Torch Run continues throughout the state this week, with another scheduled for Thursday in Munising. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. at East Channel Brewing Company.
