IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Drivers in Iron Mountain are urged to exercise caution Tuesday, September 10th as the statewide Flame of Hope Torch Run will occupy the southbound curbside lane of US-2 (Stephenson Avenue). Starting at 10 a.m. Central Time, the run and walk will commence at the Michigan State Police Post, extending several miles to the Iron Mountain Police Department.
This year, participants will once again include local law enforcement officers, community members, and children, all coming together to support the Special Olympics. The event has become an annual tradition in Iron Mountain, with Trooper Geno Basanese emphasizing the importance of raising both funds and awareness for the special Olympics.
Last year, the event saw a strong turnout, with athletes from the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District joining officers from various agencies. They embarked on a two-mile walk, symbolizing community unity and inclusion. Carla White, a key organizer and Co-Captain of the U.P. Travel Team for the Law Enforcement Torch Run, encouraged all to participate, stating, “It’s just all about raising funds and awareness for the Special Olympics.”
In 2023, the Iron Mountain event was part of a broader movement that happens annually across the Upper Peninsula, which featured nine torch runs, including a 750-mile relay starting in Copper Harbor.
