Taxi thief’s high-speed joyride ends in Dickinson County arrest

NORWAY, Mich. (WZMQ) – A high-speed chase through Dickinson County on Thursday afternoon led to the arrest of a 35-year-old woman for stealing a cab. The pursuit began after the Norway Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle at 4:28 p.m.

Norway Chief of Police Pat Wilkey provided details on the incident, stating, “We had a report of a stolen vehicle at 4:28 p.m. The vehicle was later spotted in the Iron Mountain area, where a pursuit ensued. The suspect obviously didn’t stop,” he stated.

This prompted a BOL (BOL) alert by the Norway Police Department, and the vehicle was later spotted in the Iron Mountain area. Officers laid out spike strips on the highway as the chase returned to Norway, ultimately leading to the suspect’s arrest.

The chase began sometime around the Norway Police Department’s shift change, around 5:50 to 6:00 p.m., according to Wilkey. Officers from the Norway Police Department, along with support from Kingsford Public Safety, Iron Mountain Police Department, and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene.

Chief Wilkey verified how the incident unfolded. A taxi driver, working for a local cab company, either by the name of ‘Taxi City Cab’ or ‘Kacalo City Cab’, picked up a passenger who requested a stop at the Family Dollar in Norway. The passenger asked the cab driver to get her a bottle of water from the store. When he came out, there was no vehicle, and the cab driver reported it stolen.

“There was a 35-year-old female taken into custody,” Wilkey confirmed. The woman could face charges for fleeing and eluding police and motor vehicle theft. The Chief also noted that an investigation is ongoing, but the stolen vehicle has been recovered.

Wilkey mentioned the suspect’s arraignment was expected to take place today at the Dickinson County Courthouse.
