ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Upper Peninsula State Fair opened today in Escanaba. The midway was full of food vendors, exciting rides, award winning livestock and of course the crowning of the Queen and her court. Newly appointed Queen of the Fair, Riley Rebholz and Princess Izabell Romero are honored to represent the fair in it’s 96th year.

“It’s crazy. I haven’t fully processed it yet, but it’s very cool. I don’t even know what to say. I’m still shaking,” Said Rebholz.

“Being Princess means that I am able to represent the fair in a wonderful manner, such as it should be represented, and that I get to show the youth so much more, and I’m allowed to get many opportunities I wouldn’t have had before,” Said Romero.

New this year will be a sensory-friendly midway with limited lights and noise tomorrow from 11am until 1pm. This new addition to the traditionally loud and bright midway will allow fair goers who want a little quieter experience to still enjoy the fair. Co-owner of Skerbeck Amusements, says this will be the first sensory friendly midway at the fair.

“We find that it’s a smaller window, but it’s a nice time. If you’ve got kids who are very sensitive to those kinds of things, we urge you to come out, enjoy the fair, like all the rest of the population does. Tuesday, from 11 to one is time to do that,” Said Skerbeck.

WZMQ 19 is a proud sponsor of the fair. We will have daily reports from the midway until the fair closes on August 18th.
