DNR seeks Pocket Park volunteers during U.P. State Fair

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The DNR is looking for volunteers to mentor kids as they explore outdoor activities at the U.P. State Fair.

The DNR’s Pocket Park is located at the front of the fairgrounds. It features a fishing pond, a fire tower, archery, and a pellet range.

Each year during the fair, about 220 volunteers are needed to greet visitors, teach children new skills, help young fishers catch and release bluegill, and man the fire tower. All volunteers receive free entry to the fair for the day, a meal, a shirt, and the opportunity to invest in the next generation of outdoorsmen and women.

“We have a lot of children who come through here in the summertime and they’ve never fished before or they’ve never had a chance to shoot a bow and arrow or things like that,” said Kristi Dahlstrom, Pocket Park co-coordinator for Fair week. “I think that’s important to teach kids today so that they can carry it forward and enjoy what we all love here in the U.P.”

The U.P. State Fair will take place August 12 – 18. Volunteer shifts run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. The opening day shift is 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Volunteers must be 16 or older, unless under pre-approved circumstances, and pass a background check. Training will be provided.

To volunteer, contact Dahlstrom at (906) 226-1331 or dahlstromk@michigan.gov, or contact Jo Ann Alexander at (906) 786-2351, Ext. 0 or alexanderj7@michigan.gov. For more information, click here.
