MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A group of girls from Marquette County will be competing for the national championship in competitive cheerleading on July 27 in Lexington, Kentucky.
Over a dozen girls between the ages of four and 18 will be making the trip to the cheerleading finals this year after competing in statewide competition, where the girls placed high enough to qualify for the nationwide tournament.
The girls are no strangers to success, having won the national title two years ago. Coach Jessica Elliston says these girls have been practicing all year for this event, and have grown into a very cohesive team.
“So they’re learning what it’s like to be on a team to work together,” said Elliston. “Cheer is definitely a team sport. When we’re whistling, even just one of our teammates, a stunt can’t go up. So they really have to depend on one another to make everything work.”
The team was traveling throughout Marquette Thursday having their photos taken at various places in town ahead of their trip.
