MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette County’s undersheriff Daniel Willey died Thursday after a “short illness,” according to the department.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says Willey served in the United States Air Force as a security policeman. After that, he joined the Ishpeming Police Department where he spent 30 years as a patrolman, detective sergeant, and eventually Chief of Police.

Sheriff Greg Zyburt appointed Willey as Undersheriff in 2017. In a statement, MSCO said, “Undersheriff Willey’s dedication, kindness and sense of humor will be missed by not only the staff of the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, but the community as a whole.”

You can read the full press release below:

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend, Undersheriff Daniel Willey, who passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024, after a short illness.

Dan was an Ishpeming native who served in the United States Air Force as a Security Policeman. After serving with the Air Force, he then joined the Ishpeming Police Department where he spent 30 years as a Patrolman, Detective Sergeant and then Chief of Police. Sheriff Gregory Zyburt appointed Dan as Undersheriff in 2017, where he proudly served the citizens of Marquette County until his death. Undersheriff Willey’s dedication, kindness and sense of humor will be missed by not only the staff of the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, but the community as a whole.

Our condolences and prayers go out to his family in their time of sorrow.
