ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Monday, Westwood High School had open counseling services available for those grieving the loss of a student from Westwood and a student from a neighboring school district in car crashes.
Superintendent Bryan DeAugustine reminds students that counselors are always available and encourages anyone in a crisis to call a hotline.
DeAugustine said both NICE Community Schools and surrounding communities are feeling the loss.
“The two students had a close connection as do many students around the region,” said DeAugustine. “Our kids are friends with each other from different schools, and they hang out together. So to lose two young people in a week, one from our home district, is just heartbreaking.”
Those looking for Westwood school counselors are encouraged to call the main office, whose number can be found on Westwood High School’s website.
Marquette Area Public Schools (MAPS) is also offering counseling and mental health resources resources to students, the full statement from the MAPS Superintendent is posted below.
July 1, 2024 Message to MAPS Families:
In light of recent tragedy in our community our thoughts are with those affected as well as those managing grief. Our students’ mental health is of the utmost priority and grief can be difficult to manage for us all. We know that many of the supports at MAPS are limited to the school day/year. However, your child’s wellbeing and safety are our top priority twenty-four hours a day. If you have questions or need additional resources at home, please consider the following:
