ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Delta Animal Shelter is inviting the community to support their four-legged residents at two “fur-raisers” this month.
On Saturday, July 13, the shelter will host a three-person scramble at the Highland Golf Club. Registration is $180 per team. The cost also covers donuts, coffee, lunch, and flight prizes. The event will also include silent auctions, raffles, and other activities.
“The Highland, there are a lot of dog lovers that work out there, and they just wanted to do something for the community,” said Shelter Operations Coordinator Vonnie Bruce. “Last year was our first year, and we were donated over $1,200. It’s just a fun way to enjoy your Saturday and also donate money to the shelter.”
On July 27 and 28, the twelfth annual Flyball event will take place at the Miracle of Life building at the U.P. State Fairgrounds.
“Flyball is like a sporting event for dogs,” Bruce said. “They have to race down a track, jump over hurdles, grab a ball, and run back. Teams come from all over the country.”
The Flyball event is free to attend, and there will be bucket raffles and other opportunities for attendees to donate. Proceeds will be split between the Delta Animal Shelter and Manistique’s Eva Burrell Animal Shelter.
In addition to funding daily operations at the shelter, Bruce says these events will also help with the recent increase in medical needs among incoming animals.
“Just within the last two weeks, we’ve had two cats that have come in with lip injuries that have had to have lip repairs at the vet,” she said. “We had a cat that had to have a full tail amputation due to some nerve damage that was causing her to hurt herself, we had a dog that was treated for Lyme disease. Whether that’s a stray or a surrender, we do whatever we can to help them while they’re in our care.”
Registration for the Highland Golf Club scramble will begin at 9 a.m. Participants are asked to pre-register and pay for the event by July 8 to guarantee a spot. The cost for a cart is $30. Call (906) 466-2791 for more information or click here to view the registration form.
