MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – At Wetmore Pond, the Marquette County Conservation District held a Leave No Trace Workshop Wednesday afternoon. This free event was to educate Marquette’s community on how to take care of and respect the trail system.
The impact humans leave on nature is huge, as organizers shared. This workshop exposed participants to going through trail systems without causing any damage. They demonstrated how not to use the trails if they are wet, or to walk straight through puddles compared to around, even respecting the type of path. The workshop also educated how species in the area, especially invasive species, and how humans can combat the spreading of invasive species.
Organizers enjoy showing and enjoying nature with others. Plus, the lesson they are spreading is close to their hearts.
“Everything from hiking conditions, if it’s too wet or too muddy, you don’t wanna be using trails that will be heavily impacted and rooted by you going through them during that time, to making sure you’re not contributing to the spread of invasive species on the trail,” said Maddie O’Donnell, Marquette County Conservation District Manager.
Marquette County Conservation and Respect Marquette has another Leave No Trace Workshop on June 25. However, bring your kayak, canoes, and paddle boards because this excursion is in the water.
