MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WZMQ) – A woman from Mackinac Island accidentally drowned in Lake Huron Monday while paddleboarding.
Michigan State Police – St. Ignace Post says around 9:15 a.m., troopers, Mackinac Island Police, and Mackinac Island Search and Rescue were called to the near M-185 and milepost 3.5 for reports of a person in distress on Lake Huron.
Witnesses reported they saw a paddleboarder in the water yelling for help. The witness called 911 and lost sight of the paddleboarder.
After being submerged underwater for a “considerable length of time,” according to MSP, the woman was pulled from the water by marine rescue and U.S. Coast Guard personnel.
The 22-year-old woman was flown to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City where she died later Monday evening.
MSP says winds were high with whitecaps on Lake Huron at the time of the incident, with an air temperature of about 52°F and water temperature of about 57°F.
The woman’s family has been notified. No names have been released.
