SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich, (WZMQ) – Sands Speedway has its season opener this Sunday, and the racers are ready to get rolling.
One of the racers, Anna Deiter, said she is especially excited to hit the track after having to sit out last year.
“I got a really bad concussion,” said Deiter. “So I wasn’t allowed to race, but I got cleared this season and I’m excited to be back.”
The racers say they all love the adrenaline rush, but for some, racing is more that just a hobby, it’s a family tradition.
Victoria Hawley said she grew up racing, and has now been able to pass it along to her son, who began racing several years ago.
“I didn’t think it would be that hard to watch your own child go around the track,” said Hawley. “I thought it would just be exciting like it is for me but being on the other end is a little bit tough. And when he goes out I feel a lot of that stress in that moment for sure.”
Racer Abi Yelle said one of the car she drives is also a family heirloom.
“This is a vintage modified, and this is my grandfather’s car actually,” said Yelle. “He raced for 50 odd years.”
But no matter what you drive, the racers say they are just happy to see people come down to and enjoy the show.
“Getting to meet the fans and stuff, I would say that’s probably my favorite part,” said Yelle.
The season opener is this Sunday, time trials will start at 2 p.m. and races will start at 3 p.m.
