BIG BAY, Mich. (WZMQ) – The 46th annual Big Bay Relay took place this past Saturday. 49 teams from all across the U.P. gather in Marquette to run along 550 ending in Big Bay.
This event originally started as a fundraiser and an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to come together and celebrate community, and it is still that today. From middle schoolers to senior citizens, the Big Bay Relay is open to everyone. Because County Road 550 has become busier, organizers say there are more safety precautions now.
This relay works based off a car system. The team selects one runner to start, they run their first mile and the rest of the team waits in the car at the next mile check point waiting to trade off.
This year, the money of the fundraiser went to the Big Bay trail system.
“It’s a group of volunteers who believe in community trails and fundraising and so this is a great way to get involved in a community event raising money for community trails,” said Marsha Gonestead, the Big Bay Relay director.
The team is very excited for future events and Big Bay Relays as well as grateful for all those who participated and volunteered to make this event happen.
