Iron Mountain High School seniors celebrate bittersweet tradition

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The senior class of 2024 celebrated a cherished tradition that Iron Mountain Public Schools has honored annually for over a decade. Iron Mountain High School’s Class of 2024 donned their caps and gowns for a special walk-through at North Elementary, revisiting their first school one last time.

Marking their last day of school, the seniors took a nostalgic bus ride from the high school to North Elementary. There, they proudly displayed their academic regalia and athletes exchanged fist bumps with their youngest admirers.

McKinlee Peterson, the Senior Class President, reflected on the tradition, calling the Senior Walk-Through a bittersweet moment they had eagerly awaited. “A long time, it goes back a long time. It feels kind of sad,” she said.

Peterson expressed her mixed emotions about the day’s significance, stating, “I’m just looking forward to being with all my classmates, especially today for one last time and just like this summer, just a couple of lasts.” She added, “I’m excited graduation’s next, [on] Friday.”

She also conveyed gratitude on behalf of her classmates: “On behalf of the senior graduating class I think we all just want to say thank you to everyone who got us here, and for all the teachers who never gave up on us, and for everything that they let us be involved in throughout the past 12 years that we’ve been here.”

Peterson, who participated in a peer-to-peer program, shared a personal connection to the event: “I did peer-to-peer here in the kindergarten room and the 2nd grade room. So I got to see all the little kids that I got to teach this year.”

After the walk-through, the class hurried off to their senior picnic. Their commencement ceremony is scheduled for 6 pm on Friday, May 24th, at the Iron Mountain High School football stadium.
