Local pie shop makes Marquette sweeter one slice at a time

MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – After initially opening on Pie Day in March, Peace Pie Company celebrated its grand opening today.

The grand opening featured new menu items, a raffle, and even live music.

But even though the grand opening was today, one of the shop’s co-owners Lorri Smith said the story of Peace Pie goes back a lot longer.

“I’ve been wanting a shop for many years, I started baking pies in 2015 I believe,” said Smith. “Then I got with Patty who’s the other co-owner, she owns the building, and she had called me saying, ‘I think I have the perfect spot for your pie shop.'”

And boy did she. By all accounts, so far the shop has been a roaring success.

“We knew we would be busy,” said Patty Barton the other co-owner, “but it’s been overwhelmingly busy.”

“It’s been amazing,” said Smith, “we’re overwhelmed with people showing up every single day.

But Patty said she’s not stopping there, and is already planning for her next big project.

“Really this is her pie shop, this is her vision,” said Smith, “mine is for a dumpling and hand pie truck, and that will be coming maybe next year, maybe later this year, but probably next year.”

But whether in a pie shop, or a food truck, the owners just want to help spread a little peace and joy, which was the inspiration for the name, along with some help from Smith’s daughter.

“She said ‘Mom, baking pies that’s kind of your peace, and that’s what you give to people.'” said Smith

“We want people to come in happy and be happy when they leave.” Said Barton.

Peace Pie Company is open Monday – Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. – they are closed on Tuesdays – and open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Peace Pie will also be at the farmers market this year.
