MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan State Police are zeroing in on distracted driving, from the shadows. Operation Ghostrider is a traffic enforcement detail, where MSP will have unmarked police vehicles patrolling roads for distracted driving. This operation will begin Monday, May 6th.
MSP will be enforcing the hands-free law, no electronics such as a cell phone in your hands while driving even at stop lights. Troopers mentioned in 2022, around 60 people died due to distracted driving, and Operation Ghostrider is aimed at nearing that number to zero.
Operation a motor vehicle at approximately 55 miles per hour and using you’re phone for as little as 4-5 seconds that the equivalent to driving the length of a football field so imagine driving the length of a football field blind”, commented Michigan State Police Trooper Tom Kinnunen.
MSP mentions that although distracted driving is a civil infraction it can end up with hundreds of dollars in fines.
