MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the statewide effort that started with the Michigan State Police continues to benefit those affected.
Purses with a Purpose is a month-long endeavor that collects purses, toiletries, bus tickets, and other various items to be donated to survivors of sexual assault.
The Michigan State Police started the initiative in 2019, and noted that during these traumatic situations, sometimes survivors can’t grab basic necessities like a toothbrush or deoderant, and these small gifts can go a long way. “We talk about communities and helping communities and people coming together is from the law enforcement sid emost of us live in the communities we serve and we’re just trying to make it a better place for people here,” commented Michigan State Police Trooper Gene Basanese.
“It’s doing whatever we can for the victims of sexual assault that’s it, so purses, handbags or just any other comfort items whether it be toiletries from shampoo or deoderant, hand sanitizer,” continued Basanese.
Until the end of the month, donations being made can be dropped off at Marquette Women’s Center or any Michigan State Police Post.
