Copper Shores Community Health Foundation announces Crisis Line closing

by Mitchell Rife
April 15, 2024 - Updated on April 16, 2024
A A

HANCOCK, Mich. (WZMQ) – A crisis line based in Houghton County will soon be hanging up. Since 2016, the ‘988’ always-available Crisis Line has been answering over 10 calls a day and has seen a steady decline. On June 1st of this year, this hotline will be discontinued.

The Program officials have said over the last decade as the hotline industry has grown, most calls are going elsewhere and their call volume has decreased by more than 85%.

The line will be actively receiving calls until May 31, 2024. On June 1 a recording will begin playing instructing people where to go if they are in crisis.

“There’s a whole bunch of crisis lines that have developed over the years and so between those two things we decided that it just did not make any sense for us to operate a 24-hour crisis line,” commented Copper Shores Community Health Foundation Senior Program Director Rebecca Crane.

Copper Shores Community Health Foundation will be launching a new sexual assault hotline this spring, to be available to residents of Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties.
