IRONWOOD, Mich. (WZMQ) – An Ironwood flower shop is severely damaged after a fire late Tuesday night.
Ironwood Public Safety says it happened at Lutey’s Flower Shop & Greenhouses, located at 101 S Mansfield St., at 11:36 p.m. An Ironwood resident called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the inside of the shop.
When Public Safety Officers arrived, they noticed the basement and ground level both had active fires. Crews contacted Xcel Energy upon noticing some major power lines in the vicinity.
The shop owner, who lives in the home about five feet directly south of the shop, was woken up and evacuated, as her home was filling up with smoke and at risk of catching fire due to the 20-25 mph winds.
The fire caused the floor on the ground level to cave in and spread to the second story. Both Ironwood Public Safety and the Hurley Fire Department used ladder trucks and several ground lines to extinguish the fire.
The fire was put out after about five hours. Crews were able to protect surrounding structures and part of the greenhouse attached to the shop building.
The fire is under investigation and no other details are being released at this time.
The Ironwood Public Safety Department thanked the Hurley Fire Department as well as Xcel Energy, Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, and Beacon Ambulance and Victim Services.
