MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan Criminal Justice Students are putting their studies in the classroom to the field test. Through the NMU Criminal Justice program, students are using their training in a mock crime scene.
Students are broken up into teams and set up everything from 360 cameras, fake blood, and even weaponry to then collect and record evidence of the crime scene. Instructors and students mentioned that although it’s not the real thing, practicing the routine of evidence collection and recording every small detail is the main takeaway from these exercises. “A good rule of thumb is like if you’re in doubt of taking pictures, take the pictures, collect any evidence that you think might have even a small roll in it,” commented Student Investigator Marina Curtis.
“Later on, maybe a week or a month or even years later there may be a tip that comes in and we’re able to make sense of something at that scene that didn’t make sense earlier,” said Criminal Justice Instructor Chris MacMaster.
