EBEN JUNCTION, Mich. (WZMQ) – There are plenty of eye-catching winter views throughout the Upper Peninsula, even through a warmer winter season.
Since it opened in 1987, the Rock River Canyon Ice Caves, well known as the Eben Ice Caves, have been attracting thousands of visitors to see the walls of ice that form around the start of Rock River Canyon.
“This is a huge untapped resource for our little area with the amount of people that come here for Rock River Township certainly it’s the largest we have to draw people in from outside,” commented Property Owner Jon Rondeau.
The warmer weather has canceled many events around the upper peninsula, but the ice caves, and even the trail down to it, have remained solid despite the mild winter. “As long as the temperatures are freezing and the water is dripping over the sandstone cave in there and it’s gonna make ice it happens every year,” continued Rondeau.
Valery and Erik Larsen are residents of the lower peninsula and they said the half-hour hike was something they needed to knock off the bucket list, together. “It takes a different look every day depending on the temperature but you just come out of it and it fills your cup with nature I love it,” commented Valerie.
The couple said views throughout the state are breathtaking, but it’s the appreciation for nature’s beauty that they both take very seriously. “If you don’t experience it you don’t respect it and you don’t take care of it but if you come here and you enjoy the majesty and all the things around you tend to be more respectful,” said Erik.
