ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, the Delta Conservation District Board held its first meeting with new Manager Heather LeDuc.

LeDuc comes to the district with years of experience, working as a conservation officer for a period of time in Marquette. She then moved to Delta County, serving as Conservation District manager under then-CEO Rory Mattson from 2020 – 2022.

“I primarily did work in the parks,” LeDuc said. “When he announced he wasn’t going to retire, I moved on to Billerud. When this opportunity came, I got really excited to do conservation work again, so I applied and got the job.”

LeDuc says she is excited to move the district forward and reach more of the community, including schools, interest groups, and other organizations.

“We want to really interface with all of our community members,” she said. “I know conservation means so many things to so many people. We really want to open the doors and the windows and allow everybody to come in.”

LeDuc also hopes to provide more workshops and other resources to reconnect Delta County residents with the outdoors.

“We live in a beautiful place in the U.P.,” said LeDuc. “We want to protect that for future generations, bring people together, and keep our lands and waters healthy, safe, and fun to play in.”

The Conservation District’s Annual Tree Sale kicked off earlier this week. Through April 1, a wide variety of trees are available to order through the district’s website. A drive-through pickup will be held at the U.P. State Fairgrounds April 26 – 27. Click here to view the virtual catalog.

LeDuc invites the public to connect with the Delta Conservation District at deltacd.org and on Facebook. Suggestions for workshops, events, and other community resources are welcome.
