This Friday through Sunday is The City of Negaunee‘s Heikki Lunta Festival – a celebration of what should be winter wonder; however, we are having an extremely mild winter this year! In fact, some of the Heikki Lunta events were canceled! But what can we do?– Call on Heikki Lunta himself to help, of course!
Heikki Lunta is a Finnish snow god character created by David Riutta in 1970 when the lack of snow endangered a snowmobile race. Riutta, a worker at a radio station in Hancock, played and sang the “Heikki Lunta Snowdance Song,” which begged Heikki Lunta for snow in time for the race. According to local tales, the snow fell until there was too much!
If you want the Heikki Lunta Festival to be full of snow, make up your own Heikki Lunta dance and song, and hope that the snow falls all night long!
The fun gets started in downtown Negaunee Friday evening at 5 p.m. with lighting the bonfires and the Irontown Rail Jam. To see a full list of events, click here.
