NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette’s local police are seeing that the late cold season has been prolonging the freezing ice. Marquette’s Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was practicing Wednesday on Teal Lake. Every month, the team tests its diving equipment and rehearses frozen rescue procedures, by going under the ice and testing their communication with the surface.
Even though cold temperatures have continued, officers said the ice is still only about 3 inches thick. Officers urge anyone who will be exploring the ice or utilizing the waters for fishing purposes to take precautions. “The ice conditions can vary depending on where you’re at the other things that you want to do is use the buddy system and have more than one person so that if one person runs into some danger the other person can summon for help or assist that person,” commented Marquette County Captain Lowell Larson.
Officers urge those who are willing to brave the ice, to bring an ice spud with them or an item to test the thickness in front of them.
