ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – An Escanaba retailer is helping America’s service members and veterans this holiday season.
Since November 1, Shoe Sensation locations throughout the country have been participating in the 8th annual Socks 4 Troops campaign. Escanaba store manager Marge Derkos says the campaign started with just an idea by Shoe Sensation Marketing and Sales Director David Bateman.
“He had come back from serving and he thought it was a direct need that the veterans and the service people could definitely use,” Derkos said. “It grew into all of our stores in the company doing it.”
Customers can purchase a pair of American-made socks to be donated to troops overseas. Some of the socks will be distributed to veterans in Iron Mountain and Marquette by the Bay De Noc Lions Club.
Customers will receive 20% off their purchase of the socks, as well as coupons to use in the store. Most importantly, Derkos says purchasing and donating a pair of socks will give those serving our country some extra comfort.
“Freedom isn’t free, and I think that it’s a wonderful campaign to show that we support our veterans and troops,” she said. “They sacrificed for us, so the little that we can do for them is worthwhile.”
Last year, the Escanaba Shoe Sensation Socks 4 Troops campaign brought in 346 pairs of socks. By the end of this year’s campaign, which runs through December 31, Derkos hopes to collect more than 2,000. In 2022, Shoe Sensation regionally saw more than 50,000 pairs of socks donated to veterans and service members.
The Escanaba Shoe Sensation is located at the Delta Plaza Mall on North Lincoln Road.
