MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Counties around the Upper Peninsula saw low voter turnout during today’s special election.
According to city officials from Marquette the low turnout was expected as it was only local elections on the ballot. Counties in the U.P. that had elections today included Marquette, Dickinson, Delta and Schoolcraft.
According to the Sands Township clerk, Carolyn Kerkela, an increase of mail in absentee ballots was seen this election. Marquette city reported the same thing with Marquette City clerk Kyle Whitney stating around 2,300 absentee ballots have been submitted so far.
Election officials say while voter turnout in local elections is often less than state or national, the results are just as impactful.
“Local elections, like local city commission elections are much more likely to have an impact on your day to day life, or much quicker to have an impact on your day to day life then some of the senate and presidential races,” said Kyle Whitney, the Marquette City clerk.
Voting booths are set to remain open until 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
