Author Dorothy Paad publishes book aimed at inspiring teachers of students with disabilities

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Marquette author published her new book Wednesday, hoping to inspire those with disabilities and the people who teach them in school.

In Dorothy Paad’s third published book, titled “Dorothy Is Teaching Teachers,” she writes about how to teach those in the classroom who live with cerebral palsy.

On top of a book signing, Dorothy also arranged a special tour for her fans.

“I put my heart and soul into what I do. I put my heart and soul into my books,” said Paad.

Lake Superior Press opened its doors, show off the printing press, and present Dorothy with the first hard copy of the book.

“This is actually my second time seeing it get done. I was so inspired by the first time that I wanted my friends to see it too,” continued Dorothy.

During her time in school, there was more than one occasion where she felt outcast and pushed to the side, and this book is to help people feel more included and accepted.

“There were no wheelchair stories in books with children in wheelchairs, so she didn’t have anyone to identify with,” said Dorothy’s father, Eric Paad.

As one of the main mentors for getting Dorothy to put pen to paper, Heather Picotte said she always saw the spark in the young author. Even when there were doubts, she would remind Dorothy of the inspiration she can be for the community.

“What was interesting was when we started writing the first book, she said, ‘I’m not a writer– what do you mean I’m going to write a book?'” said Picotte.

Now, three books later, Dorothy is an Instructional Coach at Northern Michigan University’s School of Education.

“It’s pretty emotional receiving that copy. I was able to get the first book,” said Picotte.

Although her journey has been different, Dorothy said her purpose to inspire has never wavered.

“Life took a different path, and I became an author, but I realized at the same time that I’m a teacher too. It’s okay if your dream looks a little different, but it can still happen,” said Paad.
