ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – During her luncheon at the U.P. State Fair on Thursday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer received recognition for her efforts to improve an Escanaba business.
Marty Fittante, CEO of InvestUP, presented Whitmer with the Superior Difference-Making Award for passing legislation to transform and upgrade the Billerud mill. According to Fittante, the state is dedicating $200,000,000 to the project, making it the largest public-sector investment in the history of the Upper Peninsula.
In an interview with WZMQ 19 News, Governor Whitmer said it is important for her to visit the Upper Peninsula to learn about businesses that residents believe require and would benefit from further investments.
“Getting up here, making sure that I connect with people and business owners and understand the unique challenges but also celebrate the unique victories that we’ve been able to achieve for the Upper Peninsula is really important,” said Whitmer.
Upper Peninsula Michigan Works! also presented a gift to Governor Whitmer to thank her for her work.
