MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – 25 people walked Presque Isle park in Marquette Wednesday to pick up waste and help keep Lake Superior clean. The Marquette County Conservation district teamed up with Great Lakes with great responsibility to host the event.
Volunteers walked the perimeter of the park to collect cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and any other trash left on the ground. The clean up makes the park more enjoyable to be and helps the ecosystem.
“Lake Superior provides drinking water to the region, to hundreds of thousands of people, it is also a food source for many people, there is lots of fishing that goes on in the lake and provides food to the region, so we need to make sure thats not getting littered with micro plastics and other things,” remarked Maddie O’Donnell the Director of Marquette County Conservation District.
The Ore Dock Brewery sponsored the event and each volunteer was given a free drink following the clean U.P.
The MCCD runs a number of clean ups throughout the summer and fall. They do not have another cleanup scheduled as of now but you can view a full list of events here.
