ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – This weekend, Delta County is coming together to help families in need.
Mission of Hope is hosting its fifth annual giveaway on Sunday, August 6, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Ruth Butler Buildling at the U.P. State Fairgrounds.
More than 100 volunteers will give out new shoes, school supplies like backpacks and notebooks, hygiene products and diapers, laundry and dish soap, and other essentials for families preparing to send their kids back to school. Local hairstylists will also be on-site to do free haircuts.
Mission of Hope Director Paul Culbertson says he wants every child to feel confident when they return to the classroom this fall.
“I, too, was one of those kids that needed help, and what a blessing it would have been if I could go back to school with new shoes, a new haircut, new school supplies,” he said. “We believe that confidence helps them to learn better, it helps them to be a part of something. We just want every student to walk through school with their head held high.”
The event will also feature live music, walking tacos, free family photos, and a kids’ zone with bounce houses, cotton candy, and carnival games. The Gladstone BraveBots will have their robots on display.
Items will be given away with no questions asked and without judgment. However, a child must be present with their parent or guardian to receive free supplies or services from Mission of Hope.
The community donated more than 300 pairs of new shoes at Mission of Hope’s Glow Run on July 21. Culbertson expects to give out 500-600 pairs of shoes and backpacks on Sunday.
