Iron Mountain’s weekend Gus Macker basketball tournament shoots to support local childrens museum

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – In Dickinson County, the Gus Macker three-on-three basketball tournament was in full swing, with an intense battle brewing among the public safety officers. As the Gus Macker tournament continued, tensions rose as some officers engaged in a war of words, each claiming that their respective police department had the best game.

“We’re coming for ya,” Deputy David Reed confidently declared to his opponents, brimming with determination as he prepared for the highly anticipated tournament. This year, the public safety officers were vying for the prestigious Border Battle Trophy, and the competition was reaching a boiling point. Reed believed that his department had a solid strategy in place to secure a victory.

“So I’m on team one. We’ve got another team, Team 2, with the Undersheriff,” Reed explained, emphasizing the advantage they had with two teams competing. “We’ve got double the opportunity to take the trophy home.”

Not one to back down, Kingsford Public Safety Officer Rodney Woodward fired back, boasting about the reinforcements they had acquired from Northern Michigan University.

“But that’s fine, ’cause they can talk all the smack they want,” Woodward declared defiantly. “Because we’re coming for them, and they’re going down.”

Meanwhile, Undersheriff Aaron Rochon took a different approach to the competition, choosing to let their game do the talking.

“Well, our team’s philosophy is that we don’t need the trash talk,” Rochon calmly stated. “We’re going to let our game talk.”

The Gus Macker tournament has been traveling across the country since 1987, raising funds for various organizations. In this year’s tournament, nearly 300 teams had gathered to showcase their skills and compete for coveted trophies, raising money for the local children’s museum, The Imagination Factory. The stage was set for an exhilarating tournament as the officers geared up to battle it out on the basketball court, each determined to emerge victorious.

The border battle trophy left the U.P. And went to the Florence county sheriff’s department in Wisconsin. Florence county Sheriff Teresa Krisman says she’ll be back next year to defend the title.

Some of the teams in the tournament’s first place from the winner’s list were:

Top Men’s: ´Can Go’

Kids Firsts:

Fliv Fab 4

Kingsford Crossovers

Lady Pirates

W.I.N.

Oilers

U.P. Blizzard
