MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The NMU Theater and Dance Program is getting ready to open its second show of the summer. Rock of Ages, a gritty and glamorous jukebox musical, takes place in the late 1980s.

The musical tells the story of a group trying to save their hometown strip from being turned into a mall, all set to the tune of an 80s classic rock soundtrack. Lia Hielkema plays Regina Koontz, the cooperate assistant to the mayor who sides with the musicians during the fight for the strip mall. Hielkema says her favorite part of the show is the energy that it brings to the cast and to the audience.

“Rock of ages is a fun, trashy, wild comedy musical, it’s a lot of fun for both us and the audience.” Hielkema says, “It’s songs that you know with a story you might not.”

The show opens tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 14th at 7:30 pm in the Forest Roberts Theater. Tickets are $17 for the general public and are available to the door or online through NMU ticketing. Shows are Wednesday, June 14th through Saturday the 17th at 7:30pm and Wednesday, June 21st through Saturday the 24th at 7:30pm.
