HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – The NMU Wildcats are heading to the CCHA Mason Cup championship.
The Wildcats took down U.P. rival Michigan Tech Saturday night. Northern stunned the Huskies 4-0.
Wildcat goals came from twins Rylan and Michael Van Unen, Andre Ghantous, and Simon Kjellberg. The standout of the game for NMU was goaltender Beni Halasz who made 44 saves in the game.
“He gives you confidence, and obviously if I feel it the players feel it too, the moments not too big for him, and like I said he’s come into his own now,” said NMU head coach Grant Potulny when speaking about Halasz’s performance in the game.
Northern will play Minnesota State next Saturday for the CCHA Mason Cup.
Michigan Tech went into the game ranked number 10 in the country. According to coach Joe Shawhan, Northern came into the game fast and got the jump on his team.
“We regrouped after the first period but played pretty tight,” added Shawhan. “Their goaltender didn’t have to make any really big saves despite the large volume of shots we took. We had a lot of good looks at the net but we shot into him.”
The Huskies will have to wait for the NCAA tournament selection show to learn if the season continues. The NCAA bracket will be revealed on Sunday, March 19.
