IRON RIVER, Mich. (WZMQ) – Troopers from the Michigan State Police responded to a two vehicle traffic crash on US-2 in Iron County that resulted in the death of one Iron River man.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, near the Bates-Gaastra Road in Bates Township.
The preliminary investigation indicates a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox occupied by two people from Amasa was traveling westbound on US-2, when an eastbound 2003 BMW vehicle driven by an Iron River man and a child crossed the center line and hit the Equinox.
The driver of the BMW, 29-year-old Robert Trotta, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in Trotta’s vehicle was treated at Aspirus Hospital in Iron River, and later released.
The driver of the Equinox was air-lifted to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau, WI, for further treatment, and the passenger was also transported to Aspirus Hospital in Iron River for non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Iron County Sheriff’s Department, Iron River Police Department, Caspian Police Department, Crystal Falls Police Department, Michigan Conservation Officers, Michigan DNR Fire, Aspirus MEDIVAC, West Iron County Fire Department, Iron County Search and Rescue, Iron County Road Commission, and Northland Towing.
