Earlier today at the Silver Creek Church, Feeding America West Michigan and other volunteers of the community were distributing boxes of food to families and members of the community in need. Feed America gathers food from farmers, manufacturers, and other donators. Throughout the pandemic, 1 in 5 residents we’re seeking food from a charitable source, making this food drive a necessity. “It’s something I saw modeled in my parents and the people who I spent my time with. For us as a church, we’re part of what we want to do is be known as good neighbors”, said Pastor Ben Taylor. This all-year-round food drive continues to lend a hand in donating meals to the community.
According to information on their website, Feeding America West Michigan gave out almost 24 million pounds of food in 2021, equating to around 20 million meals. “We know that the winter months are harder for some people and so we wanna stay consistent in our ability to provide food to those who need it”. Today they gave out 540 meals, which is pretty standard for these monthly donations. Estimates are showing that 40% of food is wasted in North America and these food banks prevent the waste from ending up in a landfill.
