Protesters Rally Outside Supreme Court, Waiting on Abortion Rights Decision

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Within the next few days, we can expect the Supreme Court to release their decision on an abortion rights case, which could overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalizes abortions.

Protesters on both sides of the abortion rights issue rally out front of the Supreme Court and every now and then, they shout at each other. They’re here waiting for the Supreme Court to release their opinion in a Mississippi abortion case, which could ultimately overturn Roe v. Wade. That nearly 50-year landmark case legalizes abortion in the U.S.

“I think it’s important we don’t want to go back 70 years when women were finding unsafe ways to do abortions,” said Mike Barron, pro-choice supporter.

“It means that the decision goes down to the states where we can fight it and protect lives,” said Susanna, a pro-life supporter.

In early May, a leaked draft decision from the Court favored overturning Roe. It ignited the national debate on abortion rights. Rallies outside the court have increased and activists in support of keeping Roe have even protested outside of Justices’ homes. It’s prompted increased security detail outside of the courtroom. Ahead of releasing these opinions, the Court put up fencing around the building and they’ve also increased law enforcement presence, too.

Justices are expected to release an opinion on Roe relatively soon. In the meantime, people we spoke with say they’ll continue to rally on days the Supreme Court releases opinions.

“I’ve been at these rallies forever, attending all the march for lives,” said Katie Everett, pro-life supporter. “Finally we have the chance to protect life.”

“The stakes of this Roe potentially being overturned can’t be overstated,” said Sam Goldman, a pro-choice supporter. “We’re talking about the lives and futures of millions of people.”
