(WWTV) — An oil spill from Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has international help in determining the extent of it.

The spill occurred around 8:30 a.m. Thursday from the plant, which is located on the St. Mary’s River just north of the Soo Locks.

Sector Sault Coast Guard said around 5,000 gallons of mechanical oil leaked into the river.

All vessel traffic was stopped until mid-afternoon.

The sheen was at least three miles down river from the Soo Locks.

Officials from Canada will be the main investigators with U.S. Coast Guard officials assisting.
