ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – This week, a Delta County union is picketing for an important cause.
United Steelworkers Local 21 and the Women of Steel are “Striking for Hunger” outside Elmer’s County Market in Escanaba and at Pat’s Foods in Gladstone. Members are collecting food, hygiene products, and monetary donations for the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul.
In recent years, the effort has raised as much as $16,000 for the pantries and brought in hundreds to thousands of pounds of food.
“The price of groceries, the price of gas, housing—everything’s went up, and there’s a lot of people that are in need right now,” said Women of Steel Coordinator Donna Dams. “I’ve been hearing at the pantries that there are more and more people that need help. That’s one thing that, Local 21 especially, we like to do. We like to give back to our community.”
The Strike for Hunger will continue at both stores on Saturday, October 10, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
