HARRIS, Mich. (WZMQ) – A traveling healthcare service is screening women across the U.P. for breast cancer.
In collaboration with the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Corewell Health brought its Mobile Mammography Unit to The Island Resort & Casino on Thursday.
“We partner with the community health workers here in the Hannahville Indian Community to provide free mammograms to people that qualify for our breast and cervical cancer control program,” said Inter-Tribal Council Program Coordinator Chelby Archambeau. “It’s important to get a mammogram and stay on top of it and check regularly. The sooner it is caught, the easier it is to treat it.”
Earlier in the week, the unit spent three days in Baraga. During that time, 107 patients received care. According to Inter-Tribal Council Patient Navigator Angel Eggert, the service is especially valuable to women living in rural communities.
“Instead of traveling 40 miles or to another location to have this service done, they can come right here, and it is free of charge,” she said. “They just need to have an ID, their insurance. Early detection saves lives.”
The Mobile Mammography Unit will be at the Hannahville Health Center on Friday, September 18. Walk-ups will be accepted, but scheduling in advance is encouraged.
