Marquette City urges County board to reconsider CAD system decision for emergency dispatch services

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Monday evening, the Marquette City Commission brought forward new concerns on a county commission decision made earlier this year regarding its local 9-1-1 dispatch services.

Over the past few years, U.P. dispatch system providers have worked to evaluate the best option of a new Computer-Aided Dispatch or ‘CAD’ system for its emergency services. Both North CAD Group and the U.P. 9.1.1. Authority agreed to select Tyler Technologies, a service in line with the Michigan State Police.

In February, the Marquette County Commission chose a separate company from the rest of the Upper Peninsula, selecting Motorola to be a provider of these services. As these contracted decisions begin to finalize, the city commission has voted 7-0 on a resolution urging the county board to reconsider this option.

“Out of the 15 counties in the U.P., Marquette County would be the only county that is not on the same system that the Michigan State Police, their regional call center, and the rest of the counties in the U.P.,” explained City Manager Karen Kovacs. “That is concerning or problematic when we have significant emergency events or require backup of some sort.”

The county is expected to respond to these concerns by the end of September.

Also on Monday, the city held a work session on its Fiscal Year 2027 Capital Improvement Plan. This included a presention of around 18 ongoing local projects that provided a fiscally conservative approach to a few of its self-funded efforts.

Following the session, the city says it will be able to dive deeper into a handful of the projects that require more funding, including fixing certain roads within the city.
