ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The U.P. State Fair is filled with unique attractions, including a one-of-a-kind, edible sculpture.
Professional food artist Nancy Baker arrived at the Miracle of Life building on Monday. With her, she brought a 640-pound block of orange cheddar cheese, an 80-pound block of white cheddar cheese, and carving tools.
Baker spent 31 hours inside a dairy cooler, carving those blocks of cheese into the sculpture pictured above. It features a large jar of milk, a dairy cow, and two kids enjoying the benefits of milk.
The display is part of the United Dairy Industry of Michigan’s Milk Means More campaign, which is an effort to promote dairy products produced within the state.
“It does provide the B-12, the Vitamin D, the protein, the calcium, and the Vitamin A,” said Milk Means More team member Linda Klope, “but there’s 13 essential nutrients that milk and dairy products provide for us. It’s a pretty easy thing to get a lot of nutrients for.”
Through the weekend, fairgoers can stop by the Miracle of Life building to answer dairy-themed trivia questions. If they answer correctly, they will receive coupons for ice cream.
Baker’s cheese sculpture will be sold during Saturday’s livestock auction. Click here to see the full U.P. State Fair schedule.
