The Marquette City Commission held a meeting tonight, with much of the discussion revolving around a tourism resolution.
The board discussed an amended version of a resolution surrounding taxation, specifically about the tourism economy. As of now, taxes caused by tourism and tourists fall upon residents of Marquette County and the area, not by tourists themselves.
This resolution would enact a ‘tourist tax’ that would help offset the costs of infrastructure and services the tourism economy requires.
The board came to a unanimous decision that the resolution would be tabled until their next meeting on August 31.
“This [resoultion] would allow the city commission and city staff to talk freely about possible tourism tax and advocate at the state level for that ability to have some revenue generating capabilities that would address some tourism issues, and not put that burden on our residents,” said City Manager Karen Kovacs.
A final version of the resolution will be proposed at the city commission meeting on August 31.
