ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Tuesday, Marquette County voters allowed for the extention of funds towards the Marquette County Department of Veterans Affairs.
Following the passing of the PACT Act in 2022, more and more veterans have been able to register for veteran aid services in the state of Michigan. This has also created massive waiting lists, months down the road in some cases.
Of the county’s 19,542 votes, 18,625 applied their ballot towards the millage seeing 15,057 yeses and 3,568 nos.
The Marquette County VA, while already under a one-tenth millage, will now receive an additional 5 cents per thousand dollars, and will be able to hire a new full time Veteran Service Officer in the new year, hoping to provide quicker care to vets in the county.
“I’m just very pleased that people checked ‘yes’ for our proposal to allow us to serve our veterans,” said Director, Diana Dost. “This hopefully will bring down the wait times for people getting into the office for new appointments, and our reaction time to be able to return phone calls and emails.”
