ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – An Escanaba nonprofit is helping families in need get ready to head back to school.
On Sunday, August 2, Mission of Hope Delta County will host its eighth annual distribution event at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. At no cost, families can receive brand new school supplies, backpacks, shoes, hygiene products, diapers, and community resources. Kids can even get their hair cut for free.
“There’s so much that’s going to be given away at Mission of Hope,” said Mission of Hope Director Paul Culbertson. “We don’t ask for addresses; we don’t ask for people’s financial backgrounds. If you have a need, just come. We just want you to know that there is hope waiting for you.”
All of the items that will be available were purchased and donated by local churches, businesses, and community members. Last year, Mission of Hope provided free school supplies to more than 650 children and their families.
“It’s really small-town community at its peak, and it has just been a wonderful thing to be a part of,” Culbertson said. “This entire community pulls together to make a difference in the lives of people who need it the most. We’re incredibly thankful.”
Mission of Hope’s distribution event will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ruth Butler Building. Early arrival is encouraged. All are welcome, but children must be present in order to receive supplies. If a family’s child cannot be present, Mission of Hope volunteers will be happy to help them after the event if any items are still available.
