MARQUETTE TWP, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Township Meijer is back open to the public after the store was struck by lightning Monday morning.
Around 10:30 a.m., a ‘loud boom’ was heard by those inside, followed by the building’s water flow alarms. The lightning strike had led to a small electrical fire, quickly responded to by Chocolay and Marquette Township fire departments. Radio dispatch reports mention the fire was located near the store’s break room.
Staff evacuated customers and closed the building while continuing a safety assessment after the fire was extinguished, and reopened the store after about two hours. As more information becomes clear from Meijer and responding officials, WZMQ 19 will stay up to date.
