MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Lake Effect Community Arts Center has unveiled its July installation.
This month’s exhibition is titled “Into the Woods.” It features work from two U.P. artists—Eric Neilson of Manistique and Emily Tobin-Lavoy of Marquette.
Tobin-Lavoy specializes in fabric art. She crafts colorful mushrooms, wall hangings, and cute creatures like a tardigrade.
“It’s really interesting to see how she makes things out of wool and how they came to be,” said Lake Effect Operations Manager Katie Birdsley.
Neilson creates vibrant oil paintings of familiar U.P. sites in different seasons throughout the year.
“He is beloved in town,” Birdsley said. “He is one of the co-owners of The Mill, and he is also very active in the community. It’s lovely to see people who are so out there show their innermost wonders.”
Birdsley says “Into the Woods” is a beautiful, calming exhibition that visitors are sure to enjoy.
“This is our busiest time of year, and the best thing we can do for ourselves is to make sure we feel settled and grounded,” she said. “Some of it is the winter tones. I know we complained, but man, do we miss it! It’s cooling to be able to look at that and to remember this is why we either appreciate the sun or we’re looking forward to getting back to that. When you can take a moment, we invite you to wander into the woods and just breathe.”
Lake Effect Community Arts will host a public reception for “Into the Woods” on Friday, July 10, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. There will be lots of other activities happening just outside the arts center for Manistique’s annual Folk Fest, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
