NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Negaunee is continuing its initiatives towards better local accessibility.
Along with the installation of more ADA parking spaces, ramp entrances, and barrier free doors around town, the city has recently applied upgrades for visual and hearing impaired individuals.
Combining forces with the Superior Alliance for Independent Living (SAIL) and local voice of Irontown Talk, Tony Stagliano, new features have been added to its informational signs at firefighters square. When scanned, details can be displayed on a device and read aloud to the individual.
“Working with SAIL and Tony have been great,” said City Manager, Nate Heffron. “We’ve recorded on voice the words of the sign, the description of the pictures, and a description of the sign itself. We have the QR codes out, people can scan those and it’ll pop up and start playing automatically.”
The city plans to add more of the codes in the near future, including an online map to view all locations.
