MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – E-bikes, electric scooters, and other mobility devices are now officially welcome on Marquette’s multi-use paths.
The City Commission passed Ordinance 26-05 tonight, allowing electric mobility devices under 750 watts — including e-bikes, electric skateboards, and one-wheels, on designated multi-use paths.
The ordinance also bans reckless or excessive-speed riding regardless of device, and prohibits these devices from being ridden on sidewalks throughout much of the Downtown Development District. The change follows months of community input and a task force formed in response to the growing popularity of electric mobility devices.
City Manager Karen Kovacs says enforcement is beginning right away. “The ordinance that was proposed and approved today takes immediate effect, so there won’t necessarily be a waiting period,” says Kovacs. “The police department has plans to start that enforcement as soon as possible. We also have our park patrol, which has already been briefed on these changes and is looking to begin their enforcement as well.”
Residents can expect to see those changes reflected on the city’s paths in the days ahead.
